Fee-Free TAFE Initiative Revolutionises Tasmania’s VET Landscape

fee-free TAFE initiative revolutionises VET landscape in tasmania

The Albanese Government’s Fee-Free TAFE (Technical and Further Education) initiative is transforming Tasmania’s vocational education and training landscape, making it more accessible and affordable for students to pursue courses in high-demand industries.

In a joint media release issued on 1 May 2023, Brendan O’Connor, Australian Government Minister for Skills and Training and Tasmanian Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Hon Felix Ellis MP, bared that over 2,200 students have enrolled in the 3,800 available Fee-Free TAFE training places, addressing future workforce demand and skills shortages across various sectors since January 2023.

O’Connor said Fee-Free TAFE is a big part of fixing skills shortages in Tasmania, particularly in education, hospitality, and the care economy. He added that the Government has already made 180,000 places available nationwide. The upcoming budget allocates $400 million to provide an additional 300,000 Fee-Free locations for vocational education and training (VET) and TAFE students.

Ellis, for his part, said that partnering with the Federal Government allows Tasmania to deliver more training to the Tasmanians who build homes, provide food, and care for loved ones.

He stated that the Tasmanian administration had committed $1.5 million for the Sorell Trade Training Centre and Jobs Hub, bringing the overall funding for the project to $3 million with the assistance of the Australian Government.

Highest Demand for Fee-Free TAFE Courses in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government announced a high demand for Fee-Free TAFE courses in aged and disability care, early childhood education and care, and technology.

Over 280 students have registered for Certificate III in Individual Support, which has seen the highest demand among Fee-Free TAFE courses in Tasmania.

Additionally, there has been significant uptake in other areas of critical skills shortage, with 450 training spots taken in tourism and hospitality, 350 in agriculture, 250 in digital and technology, 200 in construction, 150 in sovereign capability, and approximately 1400 in other priority sectors, including foundation skills.

Fee-Free TAFE is not only providing access to training and addressing skills shortages, but it is also helping to keep money in the pockets of Tasmanian students.

According to the joint release, students studying a Fee-Free TAFE place can save up to $1,653.57 when undertaking a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, $1,233.50 when undertaking a Certificate IV in Information Technology, and $1,149.52 when undertaking a Certificate III in Individual Support.

The $23 million agreement between the Tasmanian and Australian Governments will provide critical skills training, including 1,000 Fee-Free places in the care sector – 850 in aged care – as well as areas in hospitality and tourism, agriculture, technology and digital, construction, and sovereign capability.

TAFE Technology Fund Projects to Boost Tasmania’s Employment Opportunities and Reduce Skills Shortage

The Albanese administration is committing significant funds to Tasmania by sharing a $50 million national TAFE Technology Fund to modernise and expand facilities like laboratories, workshops, and IT services.

It has approved two TAFE Technology Fund projects in Tasmania, which include the Sorell Trade Training Centre and Jobs Hub and the upgrade of the spray booth at the TasTAFE Devonport campus.

The Sorell Trade Training Centre will re-skill and upskill workers for secure, well-paid jobs, while the Devonport spray booth project will create a “fit for purpose” spray painting facility.

High Hopes for Tasmania’s VET Sector

Investing in vocational education and training is essential to address Tasmania’s skills shortages and provide secure and rewarding employment opportunities.

The Albanese Government’s commitment to Fee-Free TAFE is a significant part of the solution to ensure that more Tasmanians have access to the skills and training they need, including training resources in Australia, to build their careers and support their communities.

The Albanese Government’s Fee-Free TAFE initiative provides more Tasmanians with access to skills and training in areas of critical need while keeping money in students’ pockets.
