The Government has made significant strides in addressing skills shortages and boosting the Australian economy by establishing Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs). Building on this, they are now introducing three JSCs. These industry-driven organisations, encompassing manufacturing, transport and logistics, and mining and automotive sectors, act as collaborative platforms involving employers, unions, government entities, and education and training.
Empowering Industries Through Specialised Jobs and Skills Councils
These jobs and skills councils, driven by industry needs and collective efforts, are at the forefront of revolutionising workforce development across key sectors.
- Manufacturing JSC: The Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance aims to facilitate the growth of modern manufacturing and associated industries by ensuring they have a skilled workforce with the necessary skills. Through a focus on advanced manufacturing and innovation, this alliance will contribute to the continued development of Australia’s manufacturing sector.
- Transport and Logistics JSC: Industry Skills Australia will unite employers and union leaders from the transport and logistics industries to support effective workforce planning and address the skill requirements of Australia’s core supply chain sectors. These sectors play a crucial role in supporting the nation’s economy, and collaborative efforts within this JSC will ensure their workforce needs are met.
- Mining and Automotive JSC: The Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance will closely collaborate with employers and unions to tackle workforce challenges and address skill gaps within industries vital to Australia’s economic and environmental future. The mining and automotive sectors substantially contribute to the country’s economic prosperity and encompass industries and occupations that will play a significant role in achieving our net-zero transformation.
How Will the JSCs Help Bridge Workforce Gaps
Through a steadfast commitment to tripartite leadership, the government strives to identify practical solutions to pressing workforce challenges and skill gaps across Australia’s diverse industries. The JSCs will serve as a crucial channel for bridging these gaps by fostering robust partnerships between industry stakeholders and educational institutions. Consequently, they will provide the necessary skills and training pathways to meet the evolving demands of these sectors.
To ensure effective workforce planning, the JSCs will closely collaborate with Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), aligning their efforts with JSA’s expertise in forecasting and modelling. By adopting this collaborative approach, the councils will gain comprehensive insights into job roles, skill requirements, and educational and training opportunities for each industry sector.
Among the newly established Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs), the Agribusiness JSC has taken the lead as the first operational council, making significant progress. Meanwhile, the remaining JSCs are currently under development.
